Fine Arturo Fuente cigars are among the most exclusive and sought after cigars anywhere including Cubans! These cigars from the Dominican Republic are affordable and they tend to offer a medium to rich bodied smoke. Although the flavors vary from blend to blend, the sweet spicy flavors of these cigars are highly prized by cigar enthusiasts world wide.
The very first of the fine Arturo Fuente cigars bearing the family name were hand-rolled in 1912 when Arturo Fuente started the A. Fuente Cigar Company. Among the very first brands made by the company was the "Tampa Sweethearts." Its logo of a man romancing a woman on a rowboat inspired the name. In 1924, fortune frowned on the company and Arturo lost his business to fire. To pay off creditors, without claiming bankruptcy, he worked for other cigar manufacturers.
Then during the 1940’s, with his wife and a few relatives, Mr. Fuente began the business of producing fine Arturo Fuente cigars again from the back of his home with "Arturo Fuente Cigar Company" located in Ybor City in the Tampa Bay, Florida area. The company did very well and in the mid 1950s he moved to a two-story factory building. Cigar production was on the first floor of the factory while he and his family lived on the second floor.
By the early 1960’s, the success of fine Arturo Fuente cigars demanded more space and the Fuente family moved their company into the historic "Charles the Great" cigar factory. This historic four-story red-brick building was built in 1895 and remains an architectural gem of Ybor City. Carlos, Arturo's older son, was now president of the firm, and Arturo Oscar was Vice-President.
The 1970’s was a period of economic and industrial challenges in general and for the Arturo Fuente company in particular. Runaway inflation and the inability to find skilled workers capable of producing fine Arturo Fuente cigars caused the company to look at relocating abroad. During the early 1980’s, producing hand-rolled cigars became a lost art in Tampa and visionary changes took place. Factories were started in Nicaragua then Honduras, but misfortune once again struck sending the now named "Tabacalera A. Fuente y Compania" to the Dominican Republic. There they began rebuilding the company with only seven employees. After several years, the demand from loyal cigar customers necessitated more workers and factories. Today "Tabacalera A.Fuente y Compania" has over 2,500 employees and four factories producing fine Arturo Fuente cigars.
In 1994, all Arturo Fuente operations were finally closed at the "Charles the Great" factory. At that time, Arturo Oscar officially retired from the company and then opened "Tampa Sweethearts Cigar Company," in that same building continuing the legacy of producing fine Arturo Fuente cigars.
The Fuente family also makes other lines of cigars including Ashton, Cuesta Rey, Montesino, and Sosa. These fine cigars display a variety of different flavors that cover the entire range of flavors.
